What to Expect in Your First Day Temping

May 1st, 2009 by admin | 5 Comments | Filed in Temping Tips

On your first day as a temp, it can feel a bit threatening, after all you are going into the workplace on a temporary basis, so will people even bother to give you the time of day, or will you just be given all the lousy jobs that no one else wants to do?

Well some companies may treat temps in this way, but others will make sure that you are treated well on your first day and that you are taken through procedures, fire evacuation policies, shown to the drinks machine or where the toilets are.

Basically, good employers recognise that a happy temp is a productive temp and a happy temp will stay longer than someone who is just dumped in a corner and then ignored: so it is in the interests of the employer to make sure that they welcome you and treat you in a manner that is appropriate.

As to the work you may get, well it is true that in some cases you may get a huge stack of files to place in the filing system, because everyone else hates filing. This can seem like a pain, but the good news is that if you just knuckle down to tasks that you are given, not only will you soon be appreciated by everyone on the team, you will also prove to management that you are a good worker and so if a permanent position becomes available, then you will be able to apply for it.

If you do find that your first day of temping is a nightmare, then don’t blame yourself: the employer should have ensured that you were treated in a manner that was fitting and welcomed you and out you at your ease. If you feel that you were not treated appropriately, then you can always vote with your feet and ask your recruitment agency for another position!
