Temping Tips For Students

If you are a student who has never worked, but you want to sign up for a recruitment agency and get some work for the holidays, or even during term time, creating a good curriculum vitae can feel a daunting experience. After all how can you write a curriculum vitae when you have no work experience?

Well there are things that you can mention on your curriculum vitae, that can demonstrate that you do have organisational skills or the ability to work well under pressure or to be reliable.

If you have done any kind of voluntary work then put this down on your curriculum vitae as if it were work experience. Then show how this voluntary work equipped you with skills.

If you have no work experience voluntary or paid, do not despair. If you have studied in 6th Form and are at University then you can demonstrate that you are able to work without constant supervision, that you are able to prioritise your workload, that you are reliable etc. It really is a case of using whatever experience you have and making it applicable to the working environment.

In the same way you can use your hobbies and interests to show that you are a person who is able to undertake various tasks or duties. If you have any interests that involve being part of a team, then these obviously demonstrate that you are a team player. Even things like playing in a football team, show that you are a team player.

So instead of thinking that you have no work experience, so you will get no temping jobs etc until you get your degree, then forget this kind of negative attitude. All it takes is a little creative thinking (but no dishonesty) on your behalf and if you are a student, then you should be bright enough to think how your school work, studies and interests can all show that you really are very employable!

Student Temporary Jobs

When you are a student, you will certainly be cash strapped, so the best way of making some serious money is to look for work in the holidays, whether at Christmas, the long summer vacation or even at times when companies are very short staffed, for example at half term.

Temporary jobs can also be good for your CV. For example, if you are studying law, then why not try to get a job working in a legal practice. OK you may just be answering the phone, doing the photocopying etc but it shows that you are keen and willing to turn your hand to different types of work.

But your temporary job doesn’t have to be job related. You can try lots of different types of jobs to learn more about the kind of environment you fit into or you want to work in. You may learn more about yourself and what you are good at, or what you don’t like about being employed.

You can also use a temping position to get a reference. All you have to do is to be flexible, adaptable, work hard and make sure that you do whatever job to the best of your ability.  Then you can ask your recruitment agency or the company itself for a reference. Since many people don’t have good references, this could make all the difference in the cut-throat world that is the field of employment currently.

So don’t look down your nose at temping jobs: they can assist and boost both your career and your CV and along the way you may even meet people who are great company and who can teach you skills and equip you with experience that money simply cannot buy. And at the end of it, you get a pretty decent salary, so what have you got to lose?

How Temp Agencies Has Evolved

he temporary employment industry has gone through a number of transitions over the years. While temp agencies were originally used for hiring people to fill in for workers who were on vacation, it has now evolved into an industry which uses highly skilled workers. However, the temporary employment industry is considered to be a fringe market because it only employs workers for a short period of time. In the fall of last year, nearly 4 million people were hired to work for temp agencies.

Once the economy began to slow, many of these people lost their jobs. Despite this, temp agencies are expected to thrive in the US and other nations in the coming years. There are a large number of pros and cons which are associated with this industry. While temporary jobs are the bane of many people, others find them to be enjoyable. There are a number of good reasons why working with a temp agency can be good, and they can provide benefits which are good for both employers and employees.

The very first temp agency was created in 1946 by a businessman named William Russell Kelly. He devised a business model in which he could quickly higher clerks to perform tasks for a short period of time. The agency quickly swelled in size, and this business model has been used by many other companies since this time. Temp agencies are attractive for many reasons. When the economy slows down, many people have trouble finding jobs, while others may lose jobs that they’ve had for years. When this happens, temp agencies can be very attractive.

Statistics show that temp agencies now make up 5% of the workforce in the US. Another advantage that they have is that they are flexible. Instead of working 50 weeks a year for a traditional company, a person could work at a large number of temp agencies at the beginning of the year and then take the rest of the year off in order to go on vacation or attend college. Employers benefit from temp agencies because they can save money on health insurance, retirement, and other expenses. Parents who have young children to take care of will often find temp agencies to be extremely attractive.

At the same time, there are a number of disadvantages to temp agencies which need to be discussed. Because they are short term jobs, they do not offer health insurance or retirement benefits. This means it is up to the employee to open up a 401K or IRA in order to save for retirement. It is also the responsibility of the employee to make sure they have health insurance. With temp agencies, there is no such thing as job security. You may only be hired to work for one season, and it may take you time to find another temp job. If you run out of money between jobs, you could find yourself in financial danger.

Others see temp agencies as a sign that the US economy is declining. They feel that people should stay at a job for years, and should not have to switch jobs every few months. They cite outsourcing, immigration, and corporate corruption as a factor in why so many are turning to temp agencies. Those with these views tend to be older Americans who have retired or are nearing retirement. Despite these views, it is clear that temp agencies are here to stay.

Temping Job Types

Do not assume that just because you are a temp, that you will be working in an office answering the phone and making the boss’s tea. No, there are literally hundreds of different types of temping jobs available. The word ‘temp’ means temporary, i.e. you will not be awarded a permanent contract, but that doesn’t mean that the work is actually menial. You can do lots of things from working in advertising, media, TV, radio, to being a specialised temp, for example, working as a Quantity Surveyor or a manager. You could even work as a surveyor, or a bricklayer, or a carer, cleaner or you could even work in accounts.

In fact the number of temporary jobs is constantly rising, since many employers are fearful that the recession means that they cannot take people on with a  permanent contract, so getting a temp in means that the job will be filled, but without the cost implications of a permanent contract.

In the ‘good old days’ temping jobs were very much seen as a second class job, but those days have gone now and many professionals like to work on a temporary basis, because they enjoy the variety, meeting new people and learning about how work is done in different ways, according to the procedures of different companies.

People often use temping jobs to meet their needs, whether they are a student, can’t decide on what to do or they are a writer or an actor who wants to make ends meet until their big break comes up.
