Temporary Employment Use an Employment Agency

June 11th, 2009 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Temping Agencies

If you are looking for temporary office employment in London and you have been looking unsuccessfully for a couple of weeks, then you might be starting to despair, but do not worry because it will be fine, you will be able to find a job, it just may take a little longer!

First of all, if you are using a recruitment or employment agency, then are they actually helping you to find employment? Do they have a wide range of positions to offer you? If not, then you should ditch that particular agency and go to another one!

Post your Curriculum Vitae online and make sure that you are keeping an eye on jobs going in the newspapers as well as online. Your Curriculum Vitae needs to be fairly good and if you do not have any relevant work experience the make sure that you get some, through doing voluntary work if required.

Be realistic about what jobs you can apply for. If you are starting off on your career path, do not think that you will be able to apply for positions running the company; instead you will have to start at a more junior level and build up to senior positions. Also be flexible about what hours you can work and what kind of pay you will be expecting, what kind of office you will work in. The more flexible, adaptable and so on that you can be, the better your chances of getting employment will be.

Treat finding a job as a job in itself and do not half-heartily browse through the newspapers or idly search online, in between checking out Facebook! Instead be ruthless and devote a lot of time to finding a dream temping job and then all you have to do is enjoy starting work!

What to Expect in Your First Day Temping

May 1st, 2009 by admin | 5 Comments | Filed in Temping Tips

On your first day as a temp, it can feel a bit threatening, after all you are going into the workplace on a temporary basis, so will people even bother to give you the time of day, or will you just be given all the lousy jobs that no one else wants to do?

Well some companies may treat temps in this way, but others will make sure that you are treated well on your first day and that you are taken through procedures, fire evacuation policies, shown to the drinks machine or where the toilets are.

Basically, good employers recognise that a happy temp is a productive temp and a happy temp will stay longer than someone who is just dumped in a corner and then ignored: so it is in the interests of the employer to make sure that they welcome you and treat you in a manner that is appropriate.

As to the work you may get, well it is true that in some cases you may get a huge stack of files to place in the filing system, because everyone else hates filing. This can seem like a pain, but the good news is that if you just knuckle down to tasks that you are given, not only will you soon be appreciated by everyone on the team, you will also prove to management that you are a good worker and so if a permanent position becomes available, then you will be able to apply for it.

If you do find that your first day of temping is a nightmare, then don’t blame yourself: the employer should have ensured that you were treated in a manner that was fitting and welcomed you and out you at your ease. If you feel that you were not treated appropriately, then you can always vote with your feet and ask your recruitment agency for another position!

Transition from temporary to permanent

March 18th, 2009 by admin | 2 Comments | Filed in Temporary to Permanent

There are some people who begin work not as a permanent employee but rather as a temp. Whatever the case may be, being a temp does not end at just a temporary position, but can lead to a permanent position so long as the time and effort into the job is put forth and noticeable. Here are a couple of tips to help transition from a temporary position to a permanent position.

Many people today go through job or temp agencies to find work. Some treat it as just a temp position while others treat it as a stepping stone to become a permanent employee. In either case, as an employee of the company, one should put forth 100% to their work. Some temporary workers treat their jobs differently as if their work would be different if they were permanent employees at their place of business. If you want to land a permanent position at that company, you should not take the work lightly. Treat it as if you were a permanent employee and work to your highest potential. Having people notice your work is important, especially if you want to transition from temporary to permanent. Make sure that the quality of your work is what it would be if you were a permanent employee.

Dressing for the position is important as well. Dress professionally and most likely you will be treated like a professional. Be sure to ask for the company dress code before you begin your temporary employment at the company. Remember to always follow the dress code, even if you feel that nobody is paying attention to your attire.

Getting to know some of the employees is at the company is a good way to earn your way into a permanent position. Just because you are a temp does not mean that you should just shut yourself to a corner, interact with the employees and socialize with them, they may be the people who can recommend you to become a permanent employee at the company. Who knows, you might even become good friends with the hiring manager.

Lastly, make people know that you are dedicated to the company. If you feel that you have extra time on your hands and can take on extra work, ask for some. If you feel that you have to stay a little after your normal work schedule just to finish a task, stay a while longer. If you feel that you can do more challenging tasks than the one that is given to you, request to take on more challenging work; by doing so, you show your supervisor or upper management that you are dedicated to the company and that you would make a valuable asset if they hired you on board permanently.
